Migrating from vCenter Operations 5.8.x

vRealize Operations offers the capability to migrate from vCenter Operations 5.8.x; however, you can only migrate from vCenter Operations 5.8.x to vRealize Operations 6.0.x.

If you want to migrate from vCenter Operations 5.8.x to vRealize Operation 6.1, you must first migrate to vRealize Operations 6.0.3 and then perform an upgrade to vRealize Operations 6.1.

Note

Migrations are potentially complex operations – the vRealize Operations Manager vApp Deployment and Configuration Guide for vRealize Operations 6.0.3 has information on how to migrate and, more importantly, details on whether you ought to engage VMware's Professional Services Organization (PSO) for design and migration advice.

If you already have vCenter Operations 5.8.x, you should consider the migration option if:

  • You want to retain the metrics data that you have already collected from your estate
  • Your current operational practices make extensive use of the health, alerting, and capacity planning features
  • Metrics or data from vCenter Operations is passed to other systems
  • Extensive custom content, such as, policies, custom dashboards, and groupings have been created and you wish to maintain these

Note

Not all data and features will be migrated – check the vRealize Operations Manager vApp Deployment and Configuration Guide for a full list of data and features that will, or will not, be migrated, or that may be changed. The guide also includes a full and detailed list of the pre-requisites you need in place.

The migration itself is a side-by-side operation, and you can keep your existing vCenter Operations system operating until you have completed the operation and are satisfied that vRealize Operations is operating how you need it to.

Adapters themselves will not be migrated, so before you start the migration, you will need to install the appropriate solutions on your vRealize Operations cluster.

Taking everything into consideration, I would recommend to generally avoid migration unless you have significant intellectual property, or operational practices, baked into your vCenter Operations 5.8 installation, or if you absolutely must keep your historical metrics.
